Rio Ferdinand was keen to congratulate the maligned Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana after the Red Devils won in the Champions League.
Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand interrupted an interview to slap Andre Onana to congratulate the goalkeeper for his excellent display in the Red Devils’ Champions League victory over Copenhagen. Onana saved a late penalty to preserve United’s first European victory of the season.
Ferdinand jubilantly celebrated with the summer signing after the game. Onana was conducting an interview with United’s in-house channel MUTV and was interrupted by the former centre-back.
The shot-stopper was discussing Harry Maguire’s match-winning goal when Ferdinand appeared out of shot. The television pundit shouted “Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!” before endearingly slapping Onana on the chest. Before heading away, Ferdinand continued: “Take care, good luck!Onana put his hand to his chest and responded: “Thank you!”

It was an excellent night for two of United’s most maligned stars. Maguire, who has faced scrutiny for his performances and might have left in the summer, headed home the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining.
Many questioned Erik ten Hag’s decision to replace long-serving goalkeeper David De Gea with Onana ahead of the campaign, but the Cameroon star enjoyed his most impressive display of his early United career. He superbly saved Jordan Larsson’s penalty in added time after Scott McTominay had conceded a spot-kick.
“I am happy for the goal from Harry, He was the hero tonight and I am very happy for him,” Onana reflected. “It was a good performance again from him, but we have to continue like this and, for sure, we will be stronger. “It will give us confidence for the coming games because it’s not going to be easy, but we’ll give everything and be ready because the challenge is high, that is why we are here. We are one of the best clubs in the world so we have to fight for everything, every competition.”
The 27-year-old, a £43m signing from Inter Milan in the summer, continued: “It was an important victory for us – we had to win this game if we wanted to continue this competition. We are Manchester United and we have a lot of ambition, a lot of expectation.
“We had to win this game. We cannot go out after the first three games already, we are too big to go out so soon as possible. We have to fight and work hard.”The victory over Copenhagen puts United back on track in the Champions League group after successive European defeats by Bayern Munich and Galatasaray. Ten Hag’s side are third in their group behind both of those clubs.
