Rasmus Hojlund’s performance on his Manchester United debut gave ary Neville hope, but he thinks unwarranted comparisons to Erling Haaland must stop.
After letting Cristiano Ronaldo leave in the middle of the season, United took their time choosing a replacement for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. Before chasing and signing Hojlund from Italian team Atalanta for £72 million, they toyed with the idea of moving for Harry Kane, who is currently at Bayern Munich.
Comparisons between Hojlund and the phenomenal Manchester City striker have been frequent due to their similar playing styles. Neville, a former United captain, wants the 20-year-old Dane to have the freedom to develop at his own rate.
Manchester United hasn’t have a striker they can hit, Neville said to Sky Sports after the game. Although Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford aren’t your typical target men, Ronaldo wasn’t either, and it appears that he will cause trouble for others. The fact that he is still learning the game is a plus.
“Even though he has only played a few seasons of top-level football, many believe he will one day become Manchester United’s Erling Haaland. They lack a qualified someone to support or assist him.
Then Neville said, “Martial. We have been keeping an eye on him for the past eight or nine years, and Ten Hag neither needs nor wants him. It was a promising beginning for this youngster [Hojlund], who had a high price tag.
