During his brief stint as interim boss at Manchester United, Ralf Rangnick made just one signing for the club, who has yet to feature in a match.Following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December 2021, Rangnick took the helm at United, overseeing a total of 31 games, with 11 victories, 12 draws, and eight losses, culminating in a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.
Despite initially being slated to remain as a technical consultant after his interim tenure, Rangnick’s plans changed when he was appointed manager of the Austria national team after Erik ten Hag assumed managerial duties at United.
Throughout his tenure, Rangnick emphasized the need for squad rejuvenation, famously referring to the team’s requirements as “open heart surgery.” However, only one new face, Tobias Collyer from Brighton, was added to the roster on 1st March 2022, with the midfielder signing a three-year contract.
Expressing his excitement on Instagram upon joining the 13-time Premier League champions, Collyer stated, “Delighted to join this great club @manchesterunited can’t wait to get started!”Despite training with the senior squad before the Europa League play-off victory over Barcelona, Collyer has yet to make a senior appearance. Instead, he has predominantly featured for the Under 23’s, making nine appearances in the Premier League 2 and featuring three times in the EFL Trophy.
Known for his high work rate, with a former coach noting his ability to cover approximately 13 kilometers per game, Collyer faces stiff competition for first-team opportunities. Competing with fellow highly regarded midfielders such as Zidane Iqbal, Kobbie Mainoo, and Dan Gore, Collyer continues to await his breakthrough moment under Ten Hag’s management.
