Despite the win, United needed to work extremely hard defensively, and former club captain Gary Neville believed that Harry Maguire deserved the Man of the Match whilst on commentary duty
The England international was solid defensively and also assisted Højlund’s goal with a good header from a corner. He won 11 out of 12 duels in the game.“I think Harry Maguire won a lot of first contacts in that first half, caused a big problem for Villa and the ultimate one came when he got the header for the goal,” Neville said afterwards
He made some really good interceptions at both ends, good in the end. Villa obviously still gave United a tough game.”However, the 48-year-old explained that it was, in fact, a close battle with three other United players and that he was provided the statistics for the game, which pulled the decision in Maguire’s favour.“For me, it was [Diogo] Dalot, [Raphael Varane], Maguire and [Andre] Onana that were probably the ones that I would’ve gone for out of the United players,” added Neville. “And I was just told that his [Maguire] stats were better, so there you go, for the people at home!”
Dalot assisted the winning goal with a beautiful cross, whilst Varane and Onana also had impressive games at the back
