Manchester United could be able to land one of the most in-demand stars thanks to Marcus Rashford.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing AC Milan star Rafael Leao and may have Marcus Rashford to thank if they pull off what would be a blockbuster signing. Reports out of Italy suggest that the Red Devils are one of multiple teams keeping an eye on his situation in Serie A, despite signing a new contract in July.

Leao penned a new deal until 2028 but that seemingly has not deterred United. Milan boss Stefano Pioli is said to be having some difficulties managing the Portuguese forward this season and there is a chance that he could be sold in the summer for the right price.

United will have to face competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City who are also said to be interested in his services, but the Red Devils may have an advantage thanks to Rashford. Leao has already admitted that the England forward is a “model” example that he follows.The 24-year-old surely would like the chance to link up with a player he admires so much. “Marcus Rashford is a model for me, I like the way he plays,” Leao said during a Q&A on social media in May. “Can be a legend.”

However, one issue could be whether the two players can gel together in the same setup. Both Leao and Rashford have shown a preference for playing on the left wing, though they are versatile and Erik ten Hag – or another head coach next summer with the Dutchman under pressure – could devise another system to suit their strengths.

Another United star Bruno Fernandes is clearly a fan of Leao, having worked closely with the forward in the Portuguese national team. The Red Devils’ captain previously likened Leao to Sonic the Hedgehog on social media after being blown away by his blistering pace, before working with him and Declan Rice during pre-season.

United could be in the market for another wide forward with Rashford struggling to recapture last season’s dazzling displays. Antony was left out of the Manchester derby starting lineup and has largely failed to deliver since his big-money move from Ajax over a year ago.Ten Hag’s spat with Jadon Sancho ensures that one winger will likely be leaving Old Trafford either in January or the following summer, perhaps paving the way for Leao to arrive in his place.

After United’s dismal start to the season, it has been evident that further investment is needed into the squad although they have to carefully circumvent Financial Fair Play. Leao could be the transformational signing that they need, joining up with his role model Rashford.
