Sport1, the highly reliable German media source, has stated that Manchester United have joined Manchester City in the race to sign Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard this summer. Pavard’s contract with the Bundesliga titan enters its final stretch, stirring his appetite for a fresh start.
While Bayern has set a preliminary price tag of €30 million for Pavard’s services, the World Cup 2018 winner is yet to attract a concrete bid.
Manchester United, Manchester City, and Juventus are closely monitoring the situation, having already initiated dialogue with Pavard’s representatives.United’s pursuit of Pavard may hinge on the future of their defender, Harry Maguire.
Currently the fourth choice in central defence, behind Varane, Martinez, and Lindelof, Maguire is the probable candidate to make way if United decide to place a bid for Pavard in the coming days.
On paper, Pavard represents a superior alternative to Maguire. His statistics from the previous season reveal an impressive 90% passing accuracy, achieved even though he spent half of his matches as a right-back. Pavard consistently won 2.3 tackles and five duels per game, contributing 2.5 clearances as well. Now at 27, he is at the peak of his abilities, making him a viable addition for United.
