Bruno Fernandes netted a penalty to help Manchester United beat Chelsea 4-1 at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.
Bruno Fernandes played down the spat that followed his goal celebration in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Fernandes converted a 73rd-minute penalty to net United’s third goal of the evening after he was tripped inside the penalty area by Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana. The Portuguese ace brushed himself down to cooly tuck the ball home, sending Kepa Arrizabalaga the wrong way in the process.
Despite scoring the goal that put the win beyond doubt, securing United their place back in the Champions League for next season, Fernandes’ celebration was very low-key, choosing to walk away from the ball instead of wheeling away to celebrate with adrenaline flowing through his veins.
As United’s players started to make their way back towards the halfway line to restart the game, a small altercation threatened to break out after Fernandes covered his ears. Some of Chelsea’s players took exception to his actions, but the stand-in United captain said it was nothing too serious.
Asked what triggered the small scuffle, Fernandes told Sky Sports: “Nothing. I just celebrated the goal.
“I was a little bit frustrated to not get my goal; I had a big chance that I had missed and I was a little bit frustrated. That’s it.”
Addressing the achievement of clinching a top-four finish, Fernandes added: “Yes, it is decent, but it is not perfect because we want more. But what we have done this season is great; we have won a trophy and got the top four.
“That was our goal at the beginning for the Premier League and now it is about finishing the league well and going into the FA Cup to try and win.”
