David Raya, a target for Manchester United, has already declared his interest in joining a Champions League team for the upcoming campaign.
It is a significant win for Erik ten Hag’s team, who apparently identified the Spaniard as a David de Gea rival or potential replacement in January. Tottenham and Chelsea are reportedly keeping an eye on the goalie.
The Spaniard has been in excellent form for Brentford, and given his contract situation—his present agreement with the Bees ends next summer—he could end up being a reasonable alternative for United.
His distribution is one of his strongest suits, and it’s what has put him ahead of De Gea in the Spanish national team’s pecking order.
His kicking was evident against Liverpool as he frequently connected with forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney.
And in the wake of De Gea’s significant slip-up, which led to West Ham’s 1-0 victory over United on Sunday, Raya’s earlier statements about his future trajectory have once more surfaced.
Raya wants Champions League football
The Brentford goalie discussed his contract situation at Brentford and his desire to play in the Champions League or Europa League on the “Yours, Mine, Away!” podcast, which is hosted by current Wrexham goalie Mark Howard.
I have a year left [on my contract] and I’m not sure what will happen in the summer, he said. I’ve previously stated that I turned down two contracts at Brentford because they weren’t the offers I was searching for.
“I want to give it my all to win the Champions League and the Europa League,” the player said. In my football career, I’m at the point where I want to experience it.
If he does sign with United, he will participate in one of those leagues, but which one will depend on how long Ten Hag’s team can hold onto fourth place, which they now hold by one point above Liverpool with a game remaining.
