Solly March, a midfielder for Brighton, missed the deciding penalty kick on Sunday afternoon that would have sent Manchester United to the FA Cup final.
Wembley was packed, and after 12 successful penalties, March’s unfortunate attempt went over the crossbar, giving United the lead.
Erik ten Hag’s team advanced quickly with a stylish goal from Victor Lindelof, and they will face Manchester City in the championship game on June 3.
After the final buzzer, March was understandably heartbroken. Marcus Rashford consoled the 28-year-old, who appeared to be in tears.
Moments after their penalty shoot-out victory and Manchester United’s official Twitter account were quick to crack a joke as they celebrated another cup final date.
They wrote: “WE’RE ON THE MARCH WITH TEN HAG’S ARMY!”
As you can imagine, their post sparked plenty of reaction on social media.
One commented: “I have a feeling that this admin has not yet checked who Manchester United will be playing in the final,” while another wrote: “Have some class, your squad cost 10x Brighton’s.”
A third added: “Show some respect.”
Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Marcel Sabitzer, Wout Weghorst and Victor Lindelof all successfully converted from the spot-kick for United.
For Brighton, Alexis Mac Allister, Pascal Gross, Deniz Undav, Pervis Estupinan and Lewis Dunk beat David de Gea from their respective efforts.
But it was March who fired over the bar to deny the Seagulls a place in June’s FA Cup final.
Despite his efforts from the penalty spot, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi will continue to be a huge Solly March fan.
Last month, he tipped the 28-year-old midfielder for an England call-up ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.
“I can only say my opinion and I hope Solly goes into the national team, but it’s not my job, the national team coach,” De Zerbi said. “I think he deserves to go, but Dunk too.
“Solly is a complete player. OK, he can improve in scoring but I’m pleased with Solly, for his performance.”
