Manchester United’s interest in signing Antonio Silva is intensifying, despite competition from Bayern Munich and other top clubs.
According to reports from Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, the 20-year-old Benfica center-back is attracting attention from several clubs, including United, who are “also keen on him.”
Silva boasts a hefty release clause of approximately €100 million, but negotiations could see a transfer fee in the range of €70-80 million. While Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane have shown promise in United’s defense, injuries have plagued their consistency throughout the season, resulting in frequent changes in the defensive lineup.
To address this issue, United manager Erik ten Hag may be considering the acquisition of a young central defender less susceptible to injuries to bolster defensive stability. With Varane’s imminent departure from Old Trafford due to contract disputes, Silva is being eyed as a potential replacement for the departing World Cup winner, despite Varane’s status as a key starter.
In light of the injury concerns, Silva’s durability makes him an attractive option. The Portuguese international has maintained an impressive fitness record, rarely experiencing significant injuries despite his consistent involvement in Benfica’s matches.
Although Bayern Munich has also expressed interest in Silva and has been monitoring his progress, they currently seem hesitant to pursue a center-back of his caliber due to ongoing deliberations regarding the futures of Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano.
