Man Utd will look to overhaul their squad in the summer transfer window with a number of key additions.
As the dust settles on another season, plans are already well underway for the next one. Manchester United will look back on Erik ten Hag’s debut campaign as one of successful transition, as they returned to the riches of the Champions League and won a trophy in the process.
Ten Hag learned a lot from his first season in English football and is now well aware of the enormous task he has on his hands if he is to ever topple former mentor Pep Guardiola.
United must build upon the foundations that have been laid, and that includes backing their manager in the summer window as he looks to complete the next stage of his squad overhaul. The FA Cup final defeat to Man City was a reminder of how big a job that will be, and in particular, it highlighted the three biggest issues that ideally need to be addressed in the coming months.
United’s priority is to add an elite striker to their side this summer, with that being viewed as the one signing that could have the most transformative impact on the team.
Ten Hag has already held multiple video calls with Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, who is viewed as an attainable target with United operating under the assumption Tottenham will not sell Harry Kane. The United manager is also keen on adding a young midfielder to his squad this summer, and personal terms have already been agreed with Mason Mount over a potential move. It is understood Mount’s representatives have held advanced discussions with United, but there is no agreement between the clubs on a fee yet.
There is also growing demand to sign a new goalkeeper this summer after David de Gea’s latest poor showing in the FA Cup final defeat. The 32-year-old has been offered a new deal at Old Trafford on reduced wages but has been warned by Ten Hag that he is not guaranteed to be the first-choice next season. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa is viewed by many as an ideal fit for United’s needs, but he has already signaled his intent to stay at the Portuguese club next season.United also have an interest in adding a new centre-back to the squad if possible, though that is not such a necessity given the options they already have in defence. Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw have both proven their worth as back-up options in central defence, and the club would likely need to sell club captain Harry Maguire first before sanctioning any deals in that area. Ten Hag could look to bolster his senior options by integrating loanees Amad and Alvaro Fernandez after their successful spells in the Championship, though interest is high in their services again this summer.
