Albert Botines, representative of Manchester United’s newly signed keeper Andre Onana, reveals that the reunion opportunity with Erik ten Hag helped to swat away the interests from Premier League adversaries Chelsea and Tottenham this past summer.

The Cameroonian keeper’s signing was a hard-fought win for Manchester United amidst substantial contention, particularly during the early negotiation stages. Chelsea, facing the departure of Edouard Mendy to Saudi Arabia, were hunting for a fresh starting goalkeeper. Similarly, Tottenham were on the lookout for a successor to the disgruntled Hugo Lloris, eventually setting their gaze on Guglielmo Vicario.Despite the attention from these clubs, Manchester United emerged victorious in securing Onana’s signature. Botines attributes this primarily to the influence of United’s manager, Ten Hag.

Botines shared with Calciomercato.it, “Back in April, inquiries about the player began to flood in. Tottenham sought details, Chelsea demonstrated extremely strong interest. London hosted meetings and Chelsea also met with Inter, but Ten Hag’s presence was the deciding factor.“We’re excited about the prospect of challenging celebrated managers such as [Pep] Guardiola and aiming for titles with Manchester United.”Onana donned the United jersey for the first time in the pre-season encounter against Real Madrid, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for United. Despite the loss, Ten Hag was pleased with the Cameroonian’s performance.Post-match, Ten Hag observed, “He had a good, steady game. He came up with a couple of excellent saves, stepping up exactly when the team required it, performed his role, and integrated well into the team. This is the first game with Onana and there is still a considerable amount of work to do, particularly on the defensive aspect.”
