Angel Gomes could be on his way back to England, five years after leaving Manchester United, as a Premier League club has expressed interest in signing the midfielder.

Gomes, who rose through the youth ranks at United, made his debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and accumulated 10 appearances for the club. In the summer of 2020, he opted not to renew his contract with United and moved to French side Lille.

Shortly after joining Lille, Gomes was loaned to Portuguese club Boavista to gain match experience, where he netted six goals in 32 appearances. Since returning to Lille, he has scored nine goals in 130 matches. His performances earned him a call-up to the England senior team, where he has now earned four caps, having previously represented the country at various youth levels from under-16 to under-21.

Gomes’s contract with Lille is set to expire at the end of the current season, and if he does not agree to new terms, he will be available on a free transfer in the summer.

According to talkSPORT, West Ham United are interested in bringing Gomes back to England. The Hammers, who recently appointed Graham Potter as their new manager, are also reportedly eyeing Gomes’s Lille teammate, Jonathan David. Both players could be signed on free transfers in the summer if they do not renew their contracts with Lille.

The report does not clarify whether West Ham will make a move for Gomes or David in the January transfer window, which would be Lille’s last opportunity to secure a transfer fee for either player.
