Manchester City could be planning a sensational return for a former midfielder this January, as speculation about reinforcements grows amid their current struggles.
Rodri, currently ranked fifth on *FourFourTwo’s* list of the world’s best players, has been sidelined since tearing his ACL during City’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in September. His absence has left a void in midfield, with Pep Guardiola’s side failing to secure a win in their last six matches.
Recent reports suggest the Premier League champions have held discussions with Douglas Luiz’s representatives about a potential return to the Etihad. Luiz, who never made a senior appearance for City during his initial stint, has significantly progressed since those early days.
According to *Gazzetta dello Sport*, Juventus’ technical director Cristiano Giuntoli met with City officials this week to discuss the possibility of Luiz rejoining the club. The 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who joined Juventus from Aston Villa in the summer, has made nine appearances for the Serie A side. Despite this, rumors of a move persist.
Known for his versatility, Luiz could provide the defensive stability Guardiola’s team has missed in Rodri’s absence. Juventus reportedly value Luiz at €50m (£41.6m), with the midfielder under contract until 2028. Although he has dealt with minor injuries this season, Luiz has spoken highly of his time at Juventus, praising manager Thiago Motta for his demanding yet supportive coaching style.
“Thiago Motta is very demanding, and I’m sure this will make the difference,” Luiz said. “He gives me a lot of freedom and is always available to help, which has made my experience here very positive so far.”
Despite the transfer rumors, *FourFourTwo* believes Luiz is likely to remain in Italy this January. Meanwhile, Aston Villa, Luiz’s former club under Unai Emery, return to Premier League action this weekend against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
