Roy Keane has warned that Ruben Amorim will face major challenges when he takes over as Manchester United’s head coach, delivering sharp criticism of “a few players” on the current team.
After much speculation, it was confirmed on Friday that Amorim will replace Erik ten Hag following a successful four-year tenure with Sporting Lisbon. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach has signed a contract until June 2027, with an optional extension, and will lead his first match at Ipswich Town on November 24. He is set to officially take charge on Monday, November 11, just a day after Sporting’s game against Braga.
Amorim is stepping into a tough situation, as United’s season has started poorly. Keane, speaking to Sky Sports ahead of United’s clash with Chelsea, noted that Amorim faces not just one but two major issues with the squad.
Keane criticized certain players’ lack of effort, saying Amorim must quickly identify and address these weak links. “There are a few players in big positions who can’t run, which is a big problem,” Keane said. “But there are also players who don’t want to run or, when they do, don’t run hard enough, fast enough, or long enough. Amorim needs to change that mentality in the dressing room, and the players who aren’t doing it need to be moved on.”
According to Keane, the team’s lack of work ethic has become a glaring issue. “This team doesn’t run. That’s a big problem,” he continued. “They’ve got talented players, but talent alone doesn’t get you anywhere if you don’t put in the effort.”
Keane also pointed to United’s struggles in attack, noting the team’s poor scoring record, with only eight goals in nine league games. “The lack of goals is a huge issue,” he said. “It’s hard to see United sitting with a minus-three goal difference after nine or ten games.”
