Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has raised concerns over the club’s interest in Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday. United confirmed Ten Hag’s departure after a 2-1 loss to West Ham, ending his two-year tenure.

Rumors are circulating that Amorim is the frontrunner to step into the role, but Scholes has voiced doubts about the Portuguese manager’s suitability and proposed other potential candidates. Amorim was previously linked with Liverpool and West Ham following the departures of Jurgen Klopp and David Moyes, which highlights his rising profile in Europe. However, Scholes isn’t entirely convinced Amorim is the right fit for United.

Speaking to the Premier League website, Scholes said, “Amorim is interesting but risky. His style is impressive, and we’ve heard him mentioned even for City, so that speaks to his quality. But many of these managers come from clubs where the expectations aren’t as intense as at United.”

Scholes also mentioned Brentford’s Thomas Frank as a promising manager, though he suggested the expectations at Brentford aren’t at the level United demands. He added that while he was a “big fan” of Thomas Tuchel, who is now with the England team, Scholes believes United’s new manager should have experience at an elite club.

With Frank still developing and Tuchel unavailable, Scholes urged United to consider Zinedine Zidane alongside Amorim. “This is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so they should aim for the very best. Zidane has proven himself at the highest level, winning major titles. But it’s unclear if he’s interested in managing in England or if language might be a barrier.”
