One often overlooked aspect of Manchester City’s recruitment strategy is how they strengthen their academy by signing highly talented young players.
Rather than focusing solely on first-team transfers, City actively scouts across Europe to bring in emerging talent with the goal of eventually integrating them into the senior squad.
A prime example is Oscar Bobb, who joined City as a teenager in 2019. The Norwegian has since progressed to the first team and looks set for a breakthrough season once he recovers from a long-term injury.
City’s youth recruitment continued this summer when they signed 20-year-old Divin Mubama from West Ham United, a move that received congratulations from Kobbie Mainoo. Additionally, the club secured Ryan McAidoo from Chelsea’s youth system. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, City is “convinced” that McAidoo has the potential to become an “important player” in the future. The young Englishman currently plays for City’s Under-18 team.
The club’s strategic approach is further demonstrated by their decision to include a buy-back clause when they sold Liam Delap to Ipswich Town. Delap, originally signed from Derby County as a teenager, developed within City’s system to become one of the most promising young strikers in the Premier League.
As for McAidoo, he has shown impressive form since his arrival at City. Though the decision to leave Chelsea couldn’t have been easy, his early statistics suggest he’s adapted well to his new environment. Primarily playing on the right flank this season, McAidoo recently showcased his versatility by shifting to the left wing in a match against Sparta Prague’s Under-19 side.
City hopes McAidoo will continue his strong development and one day break into the first team.
