Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is choosing to look on the positive side when it comes to the club.And the biggest reason to be positive right now is exciting teenager Kobbie Mainoo, who made his 10th appearances of the season at the weekend
Ferdinand is impressed with what he has seen from Mainoo so far, and has picked out the way he is playing in exactly the same way he did for the club’s academy teams.The former United centre-back talked to Five about his admiration for Mainoo, and also declined to answer when asked to compare the teenager to any big name players.
Kobbie Mainoo praiseSpeaking about Mainoo, Ferdinand explained: “He seems coachable, which is a big big thing.“Normally you go up to the next stage and you’re a little nervous, you simplify your game a bit more and differently and you go ‘that’s not the player I saw in the 18s’.“Bu he can transfer his playing ability and style through the age groups into the first team.
“That cool calm and collected look as an 18 year-old at a club filled with hysteria and negativity is something to look at and something to be very positive about in the coming years.“He does the simple things really well and he can do the difficult things as well. He can get out of tight situations.”Mainoo support incomingFerdinand did add that Mainoo still needs appropriate help from senior players at time, to avoid leaving him too isolated, feeling that Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes failed to do this against Tottenham.“He does need help from the experience around him,” Ferdinand said.
United will get Casemiro back to action soon, the Brazilian is back in first team training.Longer term, it is a position Manchester United must figure out. Mainoo is the future, but Casemiro is into his 30s, and there will be more speculation over his future in the summer.
