Three Man Utd players Wayne Rooney could look to sign at Birmingham including forgotten winger.

Wayne Rooney has been approached by Birmingham to become their new manager, according to reports – and could sign Manchester United players if he gets the job.The 37-year-old is currently out of work after departing DC United on Saturday, but could make a swift return to football with the Championship side.Birmingham sacked manager John Eustace on Monday morning, with the club stating that his replacement would instill a ‘no fear playing style’ that ‘all Birmingham City teams’ would utilise. And Sky Sports are reporting that the Blues have approached Rooney over potentially taking the role.

A move to St Andrew’s would represent a return to English football management for the United icon, after his spell at Derby between 2020 and 2022.Here are three United players he could potentially sign for Birmingham.Hannibal Mejbri

Perhaps the more likely of the trio to make the move to Birmingham, Hannibal spent last season on loan at the Midlands club. His successful stay at St Andrew’s elevated him into Erik ten Hag’s thinking for this term, and he has already made several appearances in United’s midfield. But the Tunisian midfielder has several players ahead of him in the pecking order, and United might sanction another loan move in January to allow the 20-year-old to get more playing time.Amad Diallo

Another player who shone in the Championship last summer, Amad Diallo scored 10 goals for Sunderland last season to propel the Black Cats into the play-off places. The Ivorian indicated his desire to have another loan spell at the club on social media, but an ankle injury suffered in pre-season with United effectively curtailed any plans for the winger.

He is expected to return before the January transfer window, though, and United may want to allow Amad to spend time out on loan in order to build up his match fitness once again. Rooney and Birmingham, in that scenario, would surely come calling.

Rooney spoke about the possibility of loaning Amad at DC United in January last year, stating that heMason Greenwood is currently on loan at Spanish side Getafe, with the club previously announcing he would leave by mutual consent after an internal investigation into his behaviour.Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault, and was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, in October 2022.

The charges were discontinued by the CPS in February, due to a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meaning there was ‘no longer a realistic prospect of conviction’.According to the Daily Mail, two Championship clubs ‘held discussions’ with United over a move for Greenwood while he was suspended. The identities of the two clubs were not released. While United’s internal investigation into Greenwood was ongoing, Rooney commented on the forward in an interview with The Athletic: “It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck.”For Mason, it’s a bad position to be in because I’m sure he just wants to play football. But for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it’s almost a catch 22.”I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else. He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time.”The prospect of a return to English football for Greenwood would be met with huge controversy and backlash, which would likely place a summer move to Birmingham on the extremely unlikely pile – although it is theoretically possible.
