Casemiro should replace Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United captain after the 7-0 defeat to Liverpool, according to club legend Gary Pallister.Fernandes was one of a number of United players to be heavily criticised after the loss, particularly from the perspective of his role as captain.The Daily Mail claimed that some United players were ‘irritated’ with Fernandes’ behaviour, particularly the decision not to go over to the travelling fans at full-time.And referees charity Ref Support UK have called for the midfielder to be banned for five games after he made contact with assistant referee Adam Nunn. The FA, however, will take no formal action over the incident.
Manager Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, is said, as per The Sun, to have ‘no plans’ to remove the captaincy from Fernandes, who wears the armband when permanent captain Harry Maguire is not on the pitch.With Maguire potentially leaving the club in the summer, his departure would open the door for United to appoint a new permanent captain.And Pallister believes the armband should go to midfielder Casemiro, not Fernandes.
Pallister wants Casemiro as Man Utd captain Speaking to Bettingsites.co.uk (via JOE), Pallister, who won 15 trophies and made over 300 appearances for the club between 1989 and 1998, explained: “I think Casemiro is a captain in waiting. I think everyone’s been impressed with the way he’s come in, with the winning mentality that he’s brought from Real Madrid.
“I don’t think they’ve had leaders recently. When I was at the club we were fortunate to have the likes of Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Paul Ince. These guys were warriors on a football pitch.”Bruno is different to that, as is Harry Maguire. I don’t think they’ve got that warrior mentality.”
Privately, he was said to be ‘alarmed’ with the way in which United capitulated after half-time, especially as they were still in the game prior to that point.The Red Devils now need to pick themselves up ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Real Betis, although it will surely take some time for the wounds of Anfield to fully heal.
