Wayne Rooney Questions Manchester City’s Decision to Loan Out Kyle Walker
Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has voiced his surprise and criticism over Manchester City’s decision to loan out club captain Kyle Walker to AC Milan during the January transfer window. Speaking at a recent press conference, Rooney described the move as “strange,” particularly after City’s 3-2 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, which has put their European hopes in jeopardy.
Rooney: ‘Walker’s Absence Exposes City’s Defensive Weakness’
Reflecting on City’s defensive vulnerabilities against Real Madrid, Rooney emphasized Walker’s importance to the team over the years.
“I think you see the importance of Kyle Walker over the last seven or eight years for Manchester City. It’s so strange to see him go out on loan to AC Milan.”
Rooney also pointed out the lack of natural alternatives at right-back, arguing that Manuel Akanji is not a natural fit and that young Rico Lewis is still developing.
“At this point in the season, when Manchester City are struggling, Kyle Walker is the captain of the football club. To allow him to go on loan… it’s a very surprising decision.”
Walker, who has been with Manchester City since 2017, joined AC Milan on loan until the end of the season. Upon his return, he will have one year left on his contract, though reports suggest he may seek a permanent transfer in the summer.
Guardiola Acknowledges City’s Defensive Issues
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted to the team’s recent struggles, particularly their defensive lapses against Real Madrid.
“It’s the fourth time we’ve faced them in recent years, and they always find a way to punish mistakes,” Guardiola stated.
Despite the criticism, Guardiola defended his team, emphasizing that football is unpredictable and sometimes a strong performance does not guarantee a positive result.

Walker’s departure has sparked questions about City’s transfer strategy, especially considering his leadership role and experience. As Manchester City battles through a challenging phase of the season, the absence of their captain leaves a significant gap in both their defense and dressing room leadership.
With their Champions League campaign now under threat, the decision to loan out one of their most reliable defenders could prove to be a costly gamble for Guardiola and City.
