Pep Guardiola will be hoping for an improvement in Manchester City’s performances as the season progresses. In their recent 2-1 victory over Wolves, City wasn’t at their best, but John Stones’ last-minute header secured the win, extending their unbeaten league run to 31 games—a testament to the squad’s elite mentality. However, Guardiola admitted he didn’t “recognize” his team during parts of their 3-2 win against Fulham, particularly in the final 30 minutes. He emphasized the importance of composure in the final third, noting how Fulham made the game difficult by defending deep with many players in the box.
Despite the early-season grind, City is chasing the monumental achievement of five consecutive Premier League titles, with plenty of time left to regain their best form. Guardiola expressed a preference for their performance against Wolves, despite fewer chances created, compared to the defensive vulnerability they showed at home against Fulham. City relied on moments of individual brilliance from Mateo Kovacic and Jeremy Doku to seal that game, while Fulham’s late push nearly turned the match.
Statistically, Fulham had reason to feel hard done by, as they created five big chances compared to City’s one and had a higher expected goals tally. Yet City managed to grind out the result, showcasing their ability to get over the line even when not at their best—a hallmark of champions.
As the season progresses, Guardiola will aim to tighten City’s performances, especially defensively, while hoping the squad can find their rhythm and deliver their trademark dominance in the most crucial moments.
