Jack Grealish ended the 2023/24 season with just three goals and three assists in 36 appearances for Manchester City, including only 10 Premier League starts, as he faced stiff competition for playing time from Jeremy Doku. This season, however, Grealish has already started four league matches, suggesting a more prominent role.
His first goal of the season came during England’s 2-0 Nations League victory over the Republic of Ireland in September. His improved form has earned him another call-up to the national team under interim manager Lee Carsley, who also gave him a starting spot against Finland last month. Grealish has expressed his gratitude for the faith Carsley has shown in him, particularly after a difficult summer.
Reflecting on his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, despite having played in five of the eight qualifiers, Grealish spoke candidly about his disappointment. “I was absolutely devastated,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live, adding, “I’ll be honest with you—I didn’t really agree with it.”
Grealish explained that it was one of the most challenging periods of his career, especially considering his subpar season. “You look at some players in my position—Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Jarrod Bowen—they scored a lot of goals, which I completely agree with. But I know my game isn’t just about goals. I think I bring so much more to the team.”
He emphasized the importance of balance in a squad and highlighted his experience in big games, having played in Champions League finals and FA Cup finals. “I still think I should have been picked, but it wasn’t meant to be,” Grealish admitted.
Now, he is using that disappointment as fuel for the future and praised Carsley for the impact he’s had since becoming interim boss. “I thank Lee Carsley for giving me this chance and trusting me,” Grealish said. “Throughout my career, when I’ve played under managers who show trust in me and communicate well, it really helps.”
Grealish went on to commend Carsley for his coaching style, noting how much he appreciates the clear direction and personal support he’s received. “I can’t speak highly enough of him—the training sessions, how he communicates, how he wants me to play. Honestly, I can’t say enough good things.”
