Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has shared his reasons for leaving Arsenal permanently ahead of his team’s Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium. Ramsdale, who played a key role in Arsenal’s second-place finish in the 2022-23 season, became the club’s second-choice goalkeeper last season, making just six league appearances with two clean sheets.
Following a £25 million move from Arsenal, Ramsdale has since started four Premier League games for Southampton, helping secure a draw but conceding ten goals. Speaking on BBC One’s *Football Focus*, Ramsdale explained that he left Arsenal in search of more playing time. “If I was sitting on the bench, it [winning a trophy] wouldn’t have meant that much to me. I just wanted to play football… Getting out and playing was my aim, so I’m lucky I found myself here at Southampton,” he said.
Ramsdale also praised Southampton manager Martin, describing him as committed and enthusiastic. Meanwhile, Arsenal made David Raya’s loan deal permanent for £27 million, solidifying their goalkeeping options.
In a preview of the upcoming clash, Alan Shearer, in his *Metro* column, predicted an Arsenal victory to continue their unbeaten streak. Shearer critiqued Southampton’s recent performance against Bournemouth, noting that despite a better second half, they were outplayed. “I can’t see them getting anything at the Emirates,” Shearer added. Arsenal currently sit third in the Premier League with 14 points, while Southampton are 19th with just one point from six matches. Historically, Arsenal has struggled against Southampton, winning only four of their last 11 encounters against the newly promoted side.
