Manchester City could face new challenges in their goalkeeping lineup, with recent reports suggesting that Stefan Ortega Moreno may be looking to leave in pursuit of a starting role. The 31-year-old has been in the transfer spotlight for some time, seeking regular first-team opportunities as a number one goalkeeper.
During the summer transfer window, Ederson’s potential move to the Saudi Pro League seemed to offer Ortega a clear path to the top spot. However, with no Middle Eastern club meeting City’s £50 million valuation for Ederson, the Brazilian stayed on, maintaining his status as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
This situation has left Ortega as the backup option once again. According to German outlet SPORTBILD, Ortega is now considering his future at City and is prepared to seek a move if he does not become the club’s number one. Although he’s willing to wait a little longer, Ortega hopes to secure the starting position soon, aiming to boost his chances with the German national team.
As reported by Sport Witness, Ortega expects a clear signal from City about his role for next season. Should this not come, he may look to transfer as early as January or in the summer, depending on the offers available. Interestingly, he reportedly has a verbal agreement with City allowing him to leave if a suitable bid is made, despite his contract running until 2026.
Ortega has only made two appearances for City this season, both in the Carabao Cup and Champions League. He recently started in a comfortable 4-0 win over Slovan Bratislava, giving Ederson a well-deserved rest.
