United has lost Casemiro and Christian Eriksen dearly, and this summer, bolstering center midfield is a top priority.
Moisés Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister are two of the players on Erik ten Hag’s shortlist to be examined as prospective additions to Manchester United’s squad this summer.
While Christian Eriksen has been injured and Casemiro has finished a four-match suspension, Ten Hag has employed Bruno Fernandes efficiently as a deep-lying midfielder. But along with a striker, it is one of his top priorities to strengthen.
Last summer, United made an attempt to sign Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona, who had previously worked with Ten Hag at Ajax. However, the Holland midfielder chose to remain in Catalonia, where he has been an important contributor to Barca’s push toward the La Liga championship.
United has also shortlisted two midfielders from Brighton who are both of interest to Premier League clubs. The January transfer window saw Caicedo, a Colombian midfielder, try to join Arsenal, but Brighton turned down their proposals to the league leaders. Declan Rice of West Ham is a candidate for that post who interests Arsenal as well.
While teammate Mac Allister signed a new contract in October, Caicedo, 21, has subsequently extended his Amex Stadium contract until 2027. Both players are believed to be valued at around £70 million, therefore Premier League teams will look into any agreements that would allow them to depart.
The 24-year-old Mac Allister, who joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in 2019 and won the World Cup with Argentina after signing to new terms, has drawn interest from rival teams. Ilkay Gundogan’s contract is about to expire, and Manchester City is considering that area because a new deal has not yet been reached for him. During the tenure of former Brighton manager Graham Potter, Chelsea was also rumored to be interested in him.
More opposition for Ten Hag in center midfield would be a good thing. He prefers Casemiro and Eriksen to Scott McTominay, who scored the first goal against Everton last weekend.
Bruno went back from his customary advanced position to play as a deep-lying playmaker while Marcel Sabitzer, who is on loan from Bayern Munich until the end of the season, played higher forward in a No10 position. Fred, a Brazilian midfielder, was a substitute.
