Manchester United Secure Agreement for Viktor Gyökeres Ahead of Summer Move
Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon, according to recent reports.
The decision to delay the acquisition of a high-profile striker during the January transfer window left manager Rúben Amorim with limited attacking options for the remainder of the campaign. The fallout with Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa, further complicated matters, while strikers Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled to make a significant impact. Despite these challenges, United’s only winter addition was a defender.
Gyökeres Set to Join United This Summer
According to Fichajes, United’s hierarchy refrained from making a marquee signing in January because plans to bring Gyökeres to Old Trafford were “already on track” for the summer window. Reports confirm that the club has finalized terms with Sporting Lisbon, paving the way for the Swedish international to join next season.
The 26-year-old striker has emerged as one of Europe’s most prolific goal-scorers, having netted an impressive 34 goals across all competitions this season. Since his transfer from Coventry City to Sporting Lisbon in 2023, Gyökeres has become an indispensable player, known for his speed, clinical finishing, and ability to thrive in Amorim’s tactical system.
Sporting Open to Negotiations
While Gyökeres is under contract with Sporting until 2028 with a release clause of €100 million, reports suggest the Portuguese club is open to negotiating a transfer fee in the region of €70 million to facilitate the move.
Manchester United view Gyökeres as a cornerstone of their rebuild under Amorim, with the club confident that the striker’s successful partnership with the manager in Portugal can translate to the Premier League.
Caution Over Financial Constraints
Despite the positive outlook surrounding the deal, questions remain regarding Manchester United’s transfer budget due to financial fair play regulations. While the agreement for Gyökeres appears solid, fans should remain cautious until the transfer is officially completed.
If the deal is finalized, Viktor Gyökeres could provide the Red Devils with the firepower they’ve been lacking, as the club aims to reestablish itself as a dominant force in English football.
