Manchester United slumped to their 12th Premier League defeat of the season as a wasteful display saw them fall 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in north London. Alejandro Garnacho was among the culprits, squandering a golden opportunity to equalize as United struggled to convert their chances.

Injury Crisis Deepens for United

Ruben Amorim’s side was severely depleted heading into the clash, missing several key players due to injuries and illness. Amad Diallo, who sustained an ankle injury in training, could be sidelined for the remainder of the season. First-choice midfielders Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo were also absent, with the latter expected to be out for around six weeks. Additionally, long-term absentee Lisandro Martínez was joined on the sidelines by Leny Yoro, further compounding United’s problems.

United Wasteful as Spurs Edge Tight Contest

Despite Tottenham’s need for a win, United had enough chances to take something from the game. James Maddison’s strike ultimately proved decisive, but the Red Devils will rue their missed opportunities. Garnacho blazed a sitter over the bar from eight yards out, while Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee also failed to beat Spurs’ outstanding goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.

Amorim: “One Goal Made the Difference”

Speaking after the defeat, Amorim highlighted United’s wastefulness as the key factor.

“In the end, they scored, we didn’t—that was the big difference,” he told Sky Sports. “We created a lot of chances, but in games like this, where both teams are struggling, one goal was always going to decide it.”

The Portuguese manager admitted United’s tactical setup had to be adjusted due to injuries, particularly with Zirkzee leading the line instead of Diallo.

“We had a long week to prepare, but day after day, we kept losing players. You have an idea, but then it changes. I couldn’t play the same way with Joshua as I can with Amad.”

Amorim also reflected on the challenges of adapting his squad:

“You want Bruno [Fernandes] involved in the build-up because he’s excellent at switching play, but you also need him pressing high. It’s difficult when you have to constantly adjust.”

United’s Bench Filled with Teenagers

With injuries ravaging the squad, Amorim was forced to name eight teenagers on the bench, with Victor Lindelöf the only senior substitute available. The manager ultimately handed Chido Obi his Premier League debut in the final minute but made no other changes.

“They will get their chances,” Amorim said of his young players. “We have cup and European games where they will play. Today, I felt we were close to scoring, and I didn’t want to disrupt that.”

Amorim Calls for Resilience

Despite the mounting defeats, Amorim remains determined to fight through the adversity.

“This will hurt—it’s painful to lose so many games—but we have to face it and not run away,” he insisted. “We are close to turning things around, and things can change in a week.”
