The peculiar reason Lucas Bergvall wasn’t able to sign for Manchester United after two promising trials has finally been unveiled.

Bergvall, now with Tottenham Hotspur, grabbed headlines on Wednesday by scoring a controversial late winner in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The 18-year-old joined Tottenham in July 2024, after his former club Djurgarden agreed to an £8.5 million deal with the London side five months earlier.

It has now come to light why Bergvall, despite impressing during trials at United earlier in his career, didn’t end up signing for the Red Devils.

Years before his Tottenham move, Bergvall had two separate trials with United while playing for Swedish club IF Brommapojkarna. His first trial came in 2020, when he was just 15. United were impressed and reportedly considered a bid close to £1.5 million.

However, the bid never materialized. Before Bergvall could attend a second trial, Brexit regulations were enforced, preventing English clubs from signing overseas players under 18 for their academies.

United, anticipating these changes, had secured several young international talents like Alejandro Garnacho, Willy Kambwala, Hannibal Mejbri, Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Alvaro Fernandez, and Marc Jurado before the rules took effect.

Despite the restrictions, United invited Bergvall for a second trial in 2022, shortly after his 16th birthday, signaling their intent to sign him once he turned 18. During this trial, Bergvall impressed by assisting a goal in a match with United’s under-16s.

However, sources told the Manchester Evening News that a shift in United’s recruitment staff in 2022 played a key role in the club missing out on signing him when he turned 18.

Tottenham capitalized on the opportunity, securing Bergvall, who has already shown his potential. Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou praised him after his decisive goal against Liverpool, saying, “Lucas was brilliant. I don’t think people fully appreciate the level these young guys are performing at. Lucas is constantly improving. He has the ability to create space and possesses great quality, but he also works incredibly hard for the team.”
