**Morgan Rogers Shines as Aston Villa Defeat Struggling Manchester City**
Morgan Rogers delivered a standout performance for Aston Villa on Saturday, playing a key role in their 2-1 victory over Manchester City. The 22-year-old England international scored his fifth goal of the season and provided the assist for Jhon Duran’s opener, cementing his reputation as one of Villa’s most consistent performers this season.
Rogers’ rise has been remarkable. Following loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth, and Blackpool, he joined Middlesbrough permanently in July 2023 for just £1.5 million. However, the talented midfielder was once on Manchester City’s books before being sold to Middlesbrough for what now seems like a modest fee.
**Guardiola Reflects on Rogers’ Departure**
Speaking after the match, Pep Guardiola praised Rogers’ development but defended the decision to sell him.
“Do you know what happened with some players? It was a team that won the treble and the quadruple. Sometimes it’s the right tempo, the right time to give the chance,” Guardiola said.
He acknowledged Rogers’ quality but explained the challenge of breaking into City’s squad during one of the club’s most dominant eras.
“Everyone knows how good Morgan is. A lot of players went on loan or have been sold. But at that age and moment, we had players like Kevin [De Bruyne] in his prime, David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, Leroy Sané, and Raheem Sterling. Sometimes it’s difficult. That’s the only reason why.”
Guardiola added, “I’m happy for him because he’s a lovely guy. He exploded last season, and this season he’s a really, really top-class player. England have another exceptional player.”
**”In a Different Situation, He’d Be With Us”**
The Manchester City manager admitted that, given their current injury crisis and lack of form, players like Rogers would have likely had opportunities in the squad. “In the situation we are in right now, of course these kinds of players would be with us. This is obvious.”
**A Missed Opportunity?**
Rogers’ form this season has led many to question Manchester City’s decision to let him go. While Guardiola insists it was the right move at the time, Rogers’ performances for Villa suggest City may have missed out on retaining a star in the making.
