Manchester United fans criticized Joshua Zirkzee for his social media post following his brief appearance in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea.
In Ruud van Nistelrooy’s second game as interim manager after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, United took the lead in the 70th minute through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, but Moises Caicedo equalized for Chelsea just four minutes later.
Van Nistelrooy made late substitutions, including bringing on Zirkzee for Rasmus Hojlund in the 84th minute. Zirkzee, who has only scored once since joining from Bologna for £36.5 million in the summer, had a chance soon after coming on. However, he struggled to get past Wesley Fofana due to a lack of pace and failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
After the game, Zirkzee posted a photo of himself running toward goal, despite not managing to convert the chance. Fans took to social media to call out the “shameless” post.
One fan on X wrote, “No way Zirkzee actually had the audacity to post this. What a shameless move.” Another joked, “Bro thinks he runs faster—we all saw the game.” A third added, “This guy has no shame.”
Zirkzee has managed just one goal in 14 appearances across all competitions this season, while United sit in 13th place in the league.
Van Nistelrooy, who will lead United for two more games before Ruben Amorim takes over, praised his players’ effort. “Overall, it was a very good performance,” he said. “The players fought for every inch of the pitch. We created chances and could have scored another to win. It’s disappointing we couldn’t get the win, but the effort was there.”
