An injury analyst has shared an update on Gabriel Magalhaes following the Arsenal defender’s early exit due to a suspected knee issue during the game against Liverpool.
The Brazilian went down in the second half at the Emirates Stadium, and after briefly trying to play on, it became clear he couldn’t continue. Arsenal’s medical staff assessed his knee on the pitch, a potential setback that would be concerning for Mikel Arteta and his squad.
While William Saliba is set to return from suspension for Arsenal’s Carabao Cup match against Preston North End on Wednesday, he may be without his regular centre-back partner if Gabriel’s injury keeps him sidelined.
The Twitter account FPLPhysio provided insight into Gabriel’s condition, suggesting it might be a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury. They explained, “Gabriel has left the pitch with what seems to be an MCL injury. The physios initially tested for the MCL, and while Gabriel attempted to continue, he had to come off minutes later.”
According to FPLPhysio, a grade one MCL injury could mean a 1-3 week absence, while a grade two injury might sideline him for 4-6 weeks. A more severe grade three injury could result in six or more weeks out. “Given he was able to play on briefly, I’d predict it’s likely grade 1 or 2,” they added, suggesting he might miss games until after the international break.
This potential timeframe mirrors the situation with left-back Riccardo Calafiori, who recently sustained an MCL injury and is expected to be out between one to six weeks.
