Mason Greenwood, sold by Manchester United to Marseille this summer, remains determined to pursue his England career, as reported by *The Sun*.
The forward, hoping to discuss his international future with new England manager Thomas Tuchel, still dreams of representing the Three Lions despite the controversies that marred his time at Manchester United. Greenwood wants to gauge the FA’s and Tuchel’s stance before making any decisions.
Tuchel, appointed England manager after Gareth Southgate’s post-Euro 2024 departure, will officially take charge in early 2025 for an 18-month tenure.
Greenwood, who earned a single England cap in 2020, hopes to add more. After facing serious legal charges in 2022, he initially revived his career with a loan move to Getafe before joining Marseille. Since then, Greenwood has scored five goals in seven Ligue 1 appearances, showcasing his ability despite an extended absence from the game.
A source reportedly told *The Sun*: “Mason knows his chances with England are slim, but he wants to check with the FA and Tuchel to understand where he stands. He’s determined to play at the highest level, ideally aiming for the World Cup. If England isn’t an option, he’ll consider representing Jamaica in 2026.”
However, a return to the England squad seems unlikely. Southgate and interim manager Lee Carsley showed little interest in reintegrating Greenwood, and Tuchel and the FA are expected to continue in that vein, avoiding the potential backlash his inclusion could bring.
Moreover, England’s depth in attacking options complicates Greenwood’s prospects, with players like Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Jarrod Bowen excelling since Greenwood’s last international appearance. Realistically, representing Jamaica may be Greenwood’s best chance at reaching the World Cup.
