Martin Zubimendi has dismissed speculation about a potential January move to Manchester City, affirming his commitment to Real Sociedad. The talented midfielder, who has been linked with a switch to the Premier League champions, stated that he still has “things to give” to his boyhood club.
Zubimendi previously rejected a move to Liverpool over the summer, even though a transfer seemed imminent. Reports indicated that the Reds were prepared to meet his £51 million buyout clause, but Sociedad convinced the 24-year-old to stay at the last moment.
A mid-season move to City would be a blow to Liverpool, and with Rodri out for the season due to injury, there has been speculation that City might target Zubimendi in January. However, ahead of Spain’s Nations League match against Denmark, Zubimendi made it clear that he has no intention of leaving Real Sociedad in the near future.
There are always rumours but until now I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad,” he said. “I’ve still a lot of things to give to this club, I still want to grow and develop here.”
While Zubimendi is a player City admire, Manchester World understands a January bid has always looked unlikely. City opted against making an offer for the player over the summer when he was seen as available.
The 25-year-old has not missed a minute of Sociedad’s La Liga season so far and played in both of Spain’s Nations League games earlier this year. Zubimendi, who replaced Rodri in the final of Euro 2024 and is viewed in a similar mould to the City star, has earned 12 Spanish caps.
