The 33-year-old Kevin De Bruyne is currently recovering from a suspected groin injury and is expected to resume his duties for Manchester City following the October international break.
Despite his age and concerns about his ability to maintain the demanding pace of Manchester City’s matches twice a week, De Bruyne remains a crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s squad. However, with his contract set to expire at the end of this season, there is growing interest in him from various clubs around the world, particularly in emerging football markets that are looking to make high-profile signings to boost their global appeal, such as the Saudi Pro League.
While there was significant interest from Saudi Arabia during the last transfer window, De Bruyne chose to remain at Manchester City. Yet, the interest in him hasn’t faded.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Major League Soccer’s San Diego FC, owned by British-Egyptian businessman Sir Mohamed Mansour, is preparing to make a bid for De Bruyne. With his contract nearing its expiration and San Diego FC having long targeted him, the Belgian is currently weighing his options, including a potential offer from Saudi Arabia.
Although De Bruyne has not publicly addressed the possibility of moving to the United States, he has been open about considering Saudi Arabia. In an interview with Belgian broadcaster VTM last June, De Bruyne said, “For Michele (his wife), an exotic adventure is fine. These are conversations we’re having more often as a family. I still have one year left on my contract, so I need to think about what comes next.”
He added that his oldest child, who has only known life in England, has begun to ask about his future at City. “At my age, you have to be open to everything,” he said, acknowledging the significant financial opportunities in places like Saudi Arabia, especially as his career begins to wind down.
For now, it appears Manchester City is interested in extending De Bruyne’s contract, potentially solidifying his legacy as one of the club’s greatest players.
