Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to leave Manchester City when his contract expires next year, though he may be reconsidering, according to a new report. The 53-year-old, currently in his ninth season at City, has not signed a contract extension beyond next summer, and as things stand, he is expected to depart. However, Guardiola has not completely ruled out staying on.
During Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Fulham, City fans made their feelings clear, with the 1894 Group spending over £1,000 to create a banner in Catalan urging him to stay: “Pep Guardiola, we want you to stay.” The banner was flanked by Estelada flags, symbolizing Catalan independence. In response, Guardiola humorously offered to cover the cost of the banner, saying after the match, “They have to bring me the bill. I will pay, I don’t want them to spend money for that. What can I say? Thank you so much. I fell in love since the first day I was here. What’s going to happen is going to happen.”
Guardiola has previously hinted at his potential departure, particularly after lifting the Premier League title last season. However, in July, he sought to clarify his position, stating: “I have been eight years at Man City and I will not be here for eight more years, that’s why I said I am closer to leaving than staying. But I didn’t say I am leaving. Never ever. I would say. When I am leaving, I will say I am leaving. But I didn’t say that.”
It remains unclear whether Manchester City’s ongoing financial legal issues with the Premier League will influence his decision, though *Manchester News* suggests those close to Guardiola expect him to make his choice by winter.
Meanwhile, *The Athletic* reported that Guardiola’s exit had been agreed at the end of last season, but his departure is not yet a certainty. City is reportedly trying to convince him to stay, and he could still make a U-turn on his decision.
Regardless of his choice, Guardiola will be remembered as City’s most successful manager, leading the club to a historic Treble in 2023. During his tenure, he has secured 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and a Champions League.
