Paul Scholes has identified what he believes to be Manchester United’s biggest issue following their defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool.

The Red Devils were outplayed from start to finish, with Liverpool securing a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.

Following the loss, manager Erik ten Hag faced significant criticism from fans, and his job security has come under scrutiny once again, with betting odds being slashed on his potential sacking.

Speaking on Premier League Productions after the match, former England and United midfielder Scholes pinpointed a major problem with the current United team.

He said: “It was a difficult afternoon, but they need to understand what they’re up against. We know United have a lot of work to do. The center of the pitch is a big issue. I felt Liverpool were miles ahead of them there.”

“The biggest thing I noticed from being pitchside and watching the players was that Liverpool looked fitter and more athletic. [Kobbie] Mainoo took time to get into the game; Bruno Fernandes seemed sluggish; [Joshua] Zirkzee needs more playing time since he hasn’t played much.”

“That was the main concern for me. Even though it’s still early in the season, these are worrying signs—are the team working hard enough behind the scenes to be as fit as they should be? They just didn’t look fit enough.”

Scholes continued: “If you have a center-back who can’t get through a full game, that’s a concern. It suggests that the team isn’t fit enough from the start. Your back four should stay on early in the season. You might sub a full-back occasionally, but your two center-backs should be able to play the entire game. In the first three games, United have had to change them during matches. How can a center-back not be fit enough?”

“You can use the excuse of the Euros, and it might take some time to get going, but Liverpool had players at the Euros too. Other teams had players there, and they’re not struggling like this.”

After the international break, United will resume their Premier League campaign with a match against newly promoted Southampton.
