Manchester United have reportedly rejected a clause proposed in a potential deal for Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood has garnered interest from several clubs across Europe after resuming his football career away from United. Following an internal review concluding that he would not remain at Old Trafford after charges were dropped, he spent last season on loan at Getafe in La Liga, scoring 10 goals in 36 appearances.
Clubs in Spain, Turkey, and Italy have all been linked to Greenwood, with recent reports claiming that Lazio is pushing to sign the 22-year-old. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Lazio has submitted an initial bid of €20 million for him, including a sell-on clause that would give United 50 percent of any future transfer fee.
Despite Greenwood having a contract until 2025, United are keen to offload him permanently for a substantial fee this season. However, they rejected Lazio’s offer, hoping to secure £30 million for him. Lazio, looking to replace Felipe Anderson, who is returning to Brazil with Palmeiras, sees Greenwood as a top target and might need to pay a record transfer fee under owner Claudio Lotito.
A separate report from Calciomercato states that Lazio proposed including goalkeeper Christos Mandas as part of the deal, valuing the Greek shot-stopper at €20 million. United, however, are skeptical about this valuation.
Lazio continues to negotiate with United over Greenwood, with Juventus also keeping an eye on the situation. New owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had suggested a “fresh decision” involving Greenwood after acquiring a 25 percent stake in the club, but it appears that Greenwood is likely to move on.
