Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he had agreed to move to Manchester United in 2012, only for Borussia Dortmund to block the transfer.

The 35-year-old striker has since become one of the best in football history, excelling at Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona over the last decade. However, earlier in his career, Lewandowski appeared set to move to the Premier League on multiple occasions.

In 2010, Lewandowski almost joined Blackburn Rovers. With a deal agreed, the Icelandic volcanic eruption that grounded flights ultimately prevented the move. Two years later, he again seemed destined for England, this time with Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.

Despite a deal being agreed between Lewandowski and United, Dortmund refused to let him leave, forcing him to stay at Signal Iduna Park. Lewandowski recently recounted this to The Sun, saying, “I was 22, 23 years old, and it was after one or two years in Dortmund [when Sir Alex called me]. You cannot say no to him; it was the prime of Manchester United, the prime of Sir Alex Ferguson. I was decided, okay, I want to join Manchester United. But in the end, Dortmund said no. So I had to respect this.”

With Dortmund rejecting the move, Manchester United turned their attention to Robin van Persie, who led the team to their most recent Premier League title and won the league’s Golden Boot in Ferguson’s final season before retiring.

Meanwhile, Lewandowski went on to win two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund before transferring to their fierce rivals, Bayern Munich.
