A Manchester United fan channel has been targeted with death threats following an interview with Rasmus Hojlund.
Mark Goldbridge, the host of The United Stand, reportedly received menacing messages, including one stating he’s “a dead man walking.”
Striker Hojlund, aged 21, faced scrutiny from his United teammates after engaging in a conversation with the outspoken fan channel.
The Danish player, still in his inaugural season with the club, honored a commitment made post his £72m move from Atalanta by speaking with The United Stand’s Mark Goldbridge last month. However, some within the squad frowned upon his collaboration with the YouTube channel, known for its past criticisms of players.
The fallout didn’t end there, as the situation escalated to include death threats and prompted a police investigation, according to the Daily Mail. Messages directed at Goldbridge warned him of threats to his life and even mentioned other staff members and the location of the studio.
In response, security measures have been heightened, and the police were alerted on Tuesday. Greater Manchester Police stated that they are investigating the matter.
Goldbridge commented on the situation, acknowledging the passion and divisiveness of football but expressing sadness at the threatening behavior witnessed by some of their staff. He condemned the “vile pack mentality” prevalent on social media.
This isn’t the first time Goldbridge has faced backlash, as his critiques of the club and players like Harry Maguire have drawn criticism in the past. Former United player Paul Parker previously accused him of being a Nottingham Forest supporter.
On the football front, Hojlund is expected to return to Erik ten Hag’s squad after recovering from an injury setback. His impressive form in front of goal, highlighted by scoring in six consecutive Premier League games, including a record-breaking feat as the youngest player to achieve such a streak, was interrupted by injury. Nonetheless, he is poised to make his comeback in United’s FA Cup clash against Liverpool on Sunday.
