According to Sport, Manchester United has surpassed Barcelona in the hunt to recruit Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong this summer. (page 6).
The Red Devils have been keeping an eye on the Dutch right-back for the past few months, and boss Erik ten Hag is rumored to be a fan.
Sport has now claimed that the club is the favorite to sign the 22-year-old over Barcelona, who must cope with Financial Fair Play difficulties.
This summer, the Blaugrana must cut their astronomical pay bill by €200 million, failing which La Liga may not allow them to recruit new players.
Although he spent ten years at the Manchester City academy (2010–2019) before moving on to Celtic, Frimpong would want to return to Manchester.
United is in the lead in the recruitment of Frimpong.
With Leverkusen, Frimpong has had an outstanding season, tallying eight goals and nine assists from 37 appearances across all competitions.
With 1.7 tackles and 6.7 duels won per game, the Dutchman, who has played right-back or right wing-back, has also excelled defensively.
In our opinion, Frimpong is the best choice to replace Jones as United’s starting right-back.
Both Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have shown flashes of brilliance this season, but neither one possesses the all-around skills of the Manchester City graduate.
Dalot has been more productive in the last part of the pitch while Wan-Bissaka has impressed with his defensive duties for the team.
It would make sense to sign Frimpong in the upcoming transfer window since he would offer the appropriate mix of offense and defense.
Leverkusen values him at €50 million right now, but United will try to negotiate a lower final sum by adding performance-based add-ons.
The arrival of Frimpong might make Wan-Bissaka’s departure possible.Given that negotiations for a new contract have already begun, Diogo Dalot is destined to remain.
