Marcus Rashford’s skill during the Carabao Cup final was so complex, he has had to explain it to the public.
On Sunday, United ended their six-year wait for a trophy as they were victorious in the first major final of the season at Wembley.
Against Newcastle United, Erik ten Hag’s men withstood early pressure from the Magpies and took the lead in the 33rd minute thanks to a Casemiro header.
Just six minutes later, United’s lead was doubled thanks to Rashford, whose shot was deflected over Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius.
However, it was Rashford’s play in the build-up that has got fans talking, after the 25-year-old produced a stunning piece of skill to flick the ball to Wout Weghorst.
Weghorst carried the ball and played in Rashford inside the penalty area, his left-foot shot flicked off Newcastle defender Sven Botman and went into the back of the net.
Replying to a tweet that said: “Rashford what did you?”, the Englishman explained: “It was a heel-to-heel flick but in the air.”
Rashford has been in sensational form this season under the guidance of Dutchman Ten Hag.
So far, the forward has scored 25 goals and assisted nine in 38 appearances across all competitions.
After United’s Carabao Cup win, legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson has urged his old club to sign an extra striker.
On Rashford, Ferguson said to Sky Sports: “I don’t think he’s a striker. He operates away from the left-hand side and has been fantastic.
“His finishing is always good, always keeps his shots down – which is really important for a striker – and is in a great vein of form. Unfortunately for us, he’s the main source of goals – we could do with an extra one, but he’s doing it.”
Rashford has reminded his teammates to keep pushing on for the remainder of the season.
He said: “The fact that we’ve come all this way and we’ve gone on and won is a massive feeling but hopefully it pushes us now to keep going.
“I’m happy right now so it doesn’t matter! I’m buzzing with the result, the boys and the staff have put a lot of work in to get here and to go on and win it is just a massive feeling.”
